Be Still

A Norvell Note: Be Still

August 30, 2026 – Vol. 30 No. 32

Sometimes, I find it helpful to hold on to these comforting words from the Lord: “Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations; I will be exalted in the earth. The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.” (Psalm 46:10-11, NIV)

It’s been quite a busy week, and I have to say, I’m feeling a little tired and a bit on edge. Finding a moment of stillness and reminding myself to stay calm, remembering that He is God, truly helps me find a sense of peace.

Whenever you hear about a new earthquake, flood, tornado, or forest fire affecting thousands of acres and homes, take a moment to find a quiet spot and be still. Remember that the Lord Almighty is always with us, offering comfort and strength.

When the news feels familiar—much like it did yesterday and like it might tomorrow—you might wonder how some people can act with such cruelty and hatred. It’s natural to feel fear building up inside you. Take a moment to pause, turn off the noise, and find stillness, trusting that God remains in control. Remember, you’re not alone in this, and there’s comfort in faith.

You might find yourself spending more on a tank of gasoline than you expected, your insurance premiums seem to keep climbing, and you could be worried about what will happen if someone loses their job. Take a moment to find a peaceful spot, sit quietly, breathe deeply, and remember that God even cares for the dandelions.

When your wife’s doctor says they’ve done all they can, take a moment to be still and remember that the Lord will walk with both of you through this dark valley.

When life feels overwhelming, take a moment to pause and breathe.

When you’re feeling stressed and scared, take a moment to pause and breathe. Remember, it’s okay to feel this way, and allowing yourself to be still can bring a sense of calm and clarity.

Whenever you feel overwhelmed and feel like crying, take a moment to be still and allow yourself to cry if needed. It’s okay to express your emotions and give yourself the compassion you deserve.

When this Psalm was written, I like to think that the evening news (if there had been such a thing) back in those days was probably quite similar to ours. The Lord said then, and He continues to say today, be still and know that I am God.

I love you.
